Reading For Your Life

The third technique that I have found to be extremely helpful in my healing process is Reading. I have personally found this to be one of the best ways for me to process pain. As previously mentioned in the last two Weekly Dose Blogs, Writing and Running (or any exercise) allow you to personally take charge of your own healing work and to bring back a sense of personal power. Now we would like to highlight the value of reading and discuss how it can move you through your pain to a more peaceful, healed place. All three tools are sure to help you take charge in the rebuilding of your life.What I love about the three “Rs” is that they are equal opportunity techniques. Everyone has access to them, they are inexpensive, and you don’t need to recruit anyone else to help you get started on rebuilding your strength and personal power. You can create your own schedule and level of intensity for healing your mind, soul, and body. All you need to do is recognize the value they bring and then begin applying the necessary discipline to fully implement these powerful tools.Here are a few reasons to incorporate reading into your healing practice:

  • Aids with concentration… pinpoints your attention and focus on one thing… When you are fully engaged in reading, (fiction in particular) your mind is focused on the story. This offers a distraction from the troubles of the day and creates a meditative, calm, focused feeling. (Reading Partners)
  • Grows your understanding and empathy for others, in both like and different circumstances.
  • Helps calm you in preparation for sleep.
  • Helps sharpen cognitive abilities, improves communication and vocabulary.
  • Provides a sense of community and belonging, with individuals with similar experiences.

  • Offers multiple levels of creativity and imagination.

I have read and listened to countless books & podcasts in these last years, from spiritual, healing offerings to self-empowerment, self-help, meditative works, and personal growth teachings. The lessons and insights have restored a sense of peace, self-acceptance, and wholeness to my life.
