Count Your Blessings
Humans have a natural negativity bias and what that means is, we tend to focus on the negative things in our lives more than the positive. Even when the negative things are small or insignificant, such as we can’t find a parking place, or it’s raining, etc., we can fixate on these small inconveniences and behave as if they are a big deal.
This fact is never more apparent than when we are going through really hard times, for example, divorce. When we are going through this process, many of us spend a lot of our time talking and ruminating on how difficult our life is. We talk about each difficulty, giving a great deal of attention and detail to every new problem and issue.
Even though I am a proponent of talking through and about your problems (especially divorce) on a regular basis with a good friend, therapist, and/or support group, it is also important to remember that what you put your attention on grows. So, if you spend all your time focusing on how bad your life is, that will tend to take over your thoughts and become all-encompassing.
Instead, I hope that you can remember this; Even though this may be one of the most difficult things you are ever going to go through in your life, you truly are still blessed in more ways than you can count.
Just take a moment to focus on what is going right in your life at this minute!! All the things that are going right. Pay attention to how blessed you truly are and then watch the blessings grow.
Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some. – Charles Dickens
